AbstractIncorporating GIS into the Submarine Cable Telecommunication Industry Track: Telecommunications Author(s): Alec Bost, James Murray The demand for fiber-optic transoceanic telecommunication bandwidth is increasing at an unprecedented rate. With rising costs and increasing reliance on submarine cable systems, the telecommunications industry requires sophisticated tools to protect and manage its investments. Racal Pelagos, Inc. (RPI), and Concert (formerly AT&T Submarine Systems) jointly developed specifications for a GIS-based cable planning and maintenance system. With this in mind, RPI has developed an extension to Esri's ArcView called Cable Analyst. This paper looks at the functions of planners and managers of submarine cable systems and demonstrates the benefits of using GIS in the submarine telecommunications industry.
