AbstractApplication of Geographic Information Systems in Conservation and Management of an Endangered Mammal--Indian Bison (Bos gaurus) Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Areendran Gopal, QAMAR QURESHI, SANKAR KALYANASUNDARAM Habitat suitability model for Indian Bison, or gaur, in Pench Tiger Reserve, Central India, was prepared using Remote Sensing and geographic information system techniques. The model was based on information collected on various ecological aspects of Indian bison between 1996-2000. The model incorporates information from the location of radio-collared individuals, a vegetation map prepared from Indian remote sensing satellite LISS III digital data, food plant distribution, terrain, hydrogeology, and various anthropogenic pressures in the study area. The model identifies potential areas of Indian bison conservation and management in the study area and can be applicable to other similar habitats in central India.
