AbstractThe Census Bureau's Automated System for Producing Cartographic Boundary Files Track: Census Author(s): Deanna L Fowler The U.S. Census Bureau is responsible for producing cartographic boundary files for all levels of census geography to be used internally and made available to the public on the Internet. The boundary files are generalized extracts from the TIGER geographic database and are designed for use in commercial GIS and mapping software. The system was designed to automate the entire process with as little interaction as possible. Maintaining accurate geography and using a standard shoreline for all geographic layers were important and challenging requirements. The presentation will describe the process used and will cover solutions for obstacles that were encountered.
