AbstractEmpowering Policy Decisions with GIS Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Marc Futterman, Mayee Salgado GIS is a tool to empower policy decisions for TEA21, Census 2000, and Livable Communities. Customized applications in each of these subject areas will demonstrate how Southern California agencies are developing GIS-based civic access desktop tools to assist staff, public officials, interest groups, and citizens to make better informed decisions. This will include service area mapping for the County of Los Angeles Public Library, the largest district in the nation; development of a pedestrian component for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Long Range Plan; and a livable communities application for the Southern California Association of Governments.
