AbstractThe Power of GIS for Opportunity Areas Assessment Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Taisia M Gordon, David Diamond, Diane True This paper presents methodology for an ecoregion-based assessment. Opportunity areas are identified using GIS to intersect core forest (more than 90 meters from an edge) with low road density. These opportunity areas circumscribe less than 20 percent of the ecoregion. The selected polygons are ranked within each ecological subsection by attaching a value for enduring feature representation to each one. Enduring features are defined as landforms and are derived from digital elevation models. Topics discussed will include road density matrixes, opportunity area selection methods, and landform modeling procedures using ArcInfo and ArcView software.
