AbstractDevelopment of an Internet GIS for Hurricane Disaster Management Track: EMS, Fire, Disaster Management Author(s): Walter Z Tang, Santiago Torrijos Oro An Internet geographic information system was developed. The combination of hurricane research, including both environmental and economic implications, gave birth to the Hurricane Internet GIS (HIGIS). The purpose of HIGIS is to provide spatial data on the Internet to allow users to analyze the vulnerability of critical facilities during a hurricane storm event. To achieve this, two different system architectures were used, Java-based and CGI-based. HIGIS can be used as a tool for preliminary damage assessment. This application will help in the decision making process for emergency managers and public officials.
