AbstractCensus 2000 School District Geography: An Overview for GIS Users Track: K-12 Education and Library Science Author(s): Doug Geverdt This paper uses GIS technology to examine the spatial organization of public school districts across the United States. It reviews the U.S. Census Bureau's development of school district boundary files, discusses the use of these boundaries to create demographic data for school districts from Census 2000, and explores the impact that district spatial structure may have for educational researchers. Public education is fundamentally organized on the basis of geography, but the TIGER/Line boundaries show that school district spatial arrangements vary considerably within and between states. This paper highlights key geographic issues and demonstrates the effectiveness of GIS for educational research.
