Abstract

GIS and Law Enforcement: Real-World Applications
Track: Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
Author(s): Robert Gamble

This presentation showcases GIS applications being used by the Greenville, South Carolina, Police Department that impact daily operations. Topics include crime analysis; traffic collision analysis; tactical/SWAT applications; court prosecution presentations; critical event planning; and how GIS supports COMSTAT, community-oriented policing, and accreditation. Actual GIS projects are used, for example, to show how GIS was employed to determine three different patterns of "autobreakings" involving professional "autobreakers," vagrants, and juveniles. Traffic collision analysis and coordinate mapping from patrol vehicles are demonstrated. This presentation is intended to highlight real-world GIS uses in law enforcement that may be easily adopted in other agencies.
