AbstractDerivation of Multiple Thematic Maps from ArcInfo Land Cover Grids Track: Remote Sensing Imagery Author(s): Kenneth A. Stumpf, Sergio Henricy Excitement generated during early years of remote sensing applications in land cover data development has given way to more guarded opinions on the quality of results expected from traditional land cover mapping techniques and, in some instances, outright disenchantment. In traditional land cover mapping, single pixel information is lost in the process of consolidating minimum size areas that fit predetermined cover classes in the final map. A major drawback of the resulting categorical maps is that no further information can be derived. Combining image analysis, GIS, and database management tools, GRS has developed and implemented land cover mapping techniques to deliver final pixel maps that maintain individual pixel information. The end product, delivered in ARC GRID format, allows derivation of multiple thematic maps based on user-defined reclassification rules implemented as a series of SQL statements. Kenneth A.
