AbstractDistribution and Changes in COPD Mortality: 1983-1997 Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Jay H. Kim, Jimmie D. Givens In the United States deaths due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are second only to pneumonia among respiratory diseases. Using mortality records from the National Center for Health Statistics, the trends in COPD mortality are analyzed for classification into 805 health service areas (HSA) and mapped using ArcView. Preliminary analysis showing patterns of higher mortality rates are observed in the Pacific and mountain states for each analytical period, while a trend of increasing rates is seen in the middle and southern parts of the nation. And declining mortality rates are observed in New England, the Midwest, and the northern mountain states. Statistical analysis using t-test is employed to discern whether the high and low distinctions among regions are valid in a statistical context. Jay H.
