AbstractArcGIS 8 Enabling Energy Distribution Resource Planning Track: Electric and Gas Author(s): Tom Helmer This presentation will discuss the various architectures of GIS, OMS, CAD/MDT, DPS, SCADA, CIS, TC, and WMS vendors, discussing the tradeoffs between how different architectures could be and have been integrated and discussing the merits of our approaches taken to date. The levels of integration and benefits derived at each level of integration will be highlighted and Some of the topics to be covered are: the business objects (semantic data model) needed to develop an integrated solution; overviews of the product architectures including message/event, polling and user demand based; the kinds of data that should be owned by each system; the tradeoffs between different data distribution architectures-- what should be replicated, what should be using single version/current version, what can use snapshots (aged data), and how the various product architectures support the alternatives; the architectural differences between OMS and GIS and why the current state should only be managed by OMS; how GIS is architecturally better suited to analyze history logs of operations and outages; and the advantages Arc 8 Geodatabase technology provides in our approach to integrating GIS, WMS, OMS, and DPS systems.
