AbstractUsing Imagery and Land Cover Change to Document an Ecological Disaster Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Erwin Jack Villiger, Greg Koeln Since the conclusion of the Persian Gulf War, there has been an ongoing saga in the country of Iraq that has received little attention by the international community. The government of Sadaam Hussein has engaged in an organized and systematic destruction of the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East. This paper demonstrates the utility of Cross Correlation Analysis, a patented land cover change algorithm, for automatic comparison of historical and contemporary imagery to a vector or raster land cover data set. The process allows for accurate change detection and land cover mapping by integrating GIS and imagery data for historical analysis or using the latest information for updating existing data sets.
