AbstractGIS in Archaeology at Historic St. Mary's City, Maryland Track: Ecology, Archaeology, and Conservation Author(s): Silas D. Hurry, Jonathan K. Linn, Andy Maracini Historic St. Mary's City is using GIS to manage more than 3 million artifacts and 350 archaeological sites discovered at the 1,200-acre National Historic Landmark site of Maryland's 17th-century capital. Since archaeological investigations began here in the 1970s, discoveries have been recorded in the Maryland State Plane coordinate system, simplifying the GIS conversion process. GIS is used to analyze the spatial distribution of artifacts excavated from survey pits as well as to map the town layout. Mapping this information in GIS is allowing archaeologists to better define future excavations, plan site interpretation development, and move toward better intersite comparative analyses. Silas D.
