AbstractEnvironmental Information System for Management of Goreangab Dam, Windhoek, Namibia Track: Environment Management Author(s): Kat Simon This paper presents how the Municipality of Windhoek, Namibia, is using GIS to rehabilitate, monitor, and protect its most important, yet most polluted, water reservoir. The Windhoek Pilot EIS Project includes ArcView maps, a water quality database, resident surveys, aerial photographs, satellite imagery, site photos, and video documentation. The difficult challenges surrounding GIS implementation in a developing country and the management of informal settlement areas are discussed in-depth in this paper. The paper also details how the Municipality is moving from this small pilot area project to a City-wide Environmental Information System.
