Abstract

Effective Land Management Using GIS at MCB Quantico
Track: Environment Management
Author(s): Sally Meckle, Gerald O'Hara, Jesse Bellavance

Marine Corps Base Quantico is using GIS to support management of its 62,000 acres in eastern Virginia. Land management is complex here because the property is used for military training and the base provides training facilities for several tenants. Concurrently, the installation strives to protect the environment and preserve its natural resources. Using GIS, Quantico maps and analyzes existing land use, environmental, and natural resources data, simplifying the process of monitoring existing conditions and assessing future land development plans. This ensures the base and its tenants can perform their operational objectives while minimizing environmental impacts.
