AbstractA GIS Analysis of Air Medical Transportation in San Diego County Track: EMS, Fire, Disaster Management Author(s): Clint William Garrison, Alan M Smith, Leslie Upledger Ray The decision to use air medical transportation is crucial to the rapid treatment of trauma victims, especially in remote areas of the County of San Diego. Treatment within the first hour following injury has been shown to greatly improve patient outcomes. Spatial analysis of prehospital trauma patients in rural San Diego County was performed to compare air and ground medical transportation times. Geographic factors, including distance from trauma facilities, terrain, and injury severity, were examined. This information is useful for allocating emergency resources and to recommend standards for the proper utilization of air transport assets.
