Abstract

NOAA's Pribilof Islands/Bering Sea GIS
Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
Author(s): John A. Lindsay, Thomas J. Simon

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ocean Service (NOS), through its Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R), is responsible for site restoration activities on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska. As part of the cleanup and transfer of NOAA property to local entities, NOAA is assisting in the development of a sustainable economic base for the island communities. The Pribilofs are home to the largest single community of Aleut Native Americans, who rely in part on the northern fur seal, numerous sea bird species, Bering Sea fisheries, and the endangered Steller sea lion for subsistence. Approximately 70 percent of the world's population, or one million, northern fur seals rely on these islands as essential breeding habitat. In addition, commercial fishing and tourism are part of the economic development plan. To facilitate local efforts along with its own cleanup project, NOAA is developing a GIS project of the Pribilof Islands and Bering Sea resources along with providing GIS technology and training to interested Island residents.
