AbstractPotentials and Pitfalls of LIDAR in the Grand Canyon, Arizona Track: Environment Management Author(s): Steven N Mietz LIDAR and digital color infrared orthophotography were flown over the Grand Canyon in March of 2000 to address the needs of scientists and managers for a detailed basemap of the canyon. Numerous problems were discovered during the collection and processing of the LIDAR data and orthophotography. This paper shall examine the potential of LIDAR to collect relatively low-cost terrain data over large areas with limited ground control, while describing the pitfalls and shortcomings exposed during the LIDAR collection, processing, and quality control review of the LIDAR data and orthophotography.
