AbstractUnmasking the Illusion: Edge Effect and the NW Forest Plan Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): David G. Jennings The Northwest Forest Plan for "Northern Spotted Owl" forests was based on conservation biology principles of nature reserve design. Using GIS data sets and tools not readily available at the time when the NW Forest Plan was written, an analysis of available habitat for old growth interior forest conditions was conducted on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, in southwest Washington. Spatial analysis of edge impacts and related island biogeography considerations on late successional reserves (LSRs) reveal very little functional interior forest habitat remains. These results support revising the current U.S. Forest Service policy of continued logging of ancient forest stands on public lands. David G.
