AbstractEngineering Analysis with GIS and Databases: Septic Tank and Private Well Replacement Track: Water Distribution, Wastewater, and Stormwater Author(s): Bradley Scott, Donna Huey, Prasad Chittaluru Septic tanks present a significant threat to public health with the potential to contaminate the public water resources. In order to minimize the threat to public health, the Utilities Department of Orange County, Florida, wanted to identify the most problematic septic tank and private well subdivisions in the County. An extensive analysis was conducted to make recommendations for a septic tank and private well replacement program for the subdivisions in the County service area. The objective of this study was to assign priority rankings to subdivisions for replacement of septic tanks and private wells with County sewer and water systems. This study involved extensive data acquisition, analysis, and summarization. Screening criteria and weighting factors were developed to prioritize subdivisions for replacement of septic tanks and private wells. Replacement cost estimates were developed for the selected priority subdivisions. Data from diverse sources without any common fields was required for the analyses. This presented the challenge of bringing it into a common platform to facilitate the analysis. ArcView and Microsoft Access were used to accomplish this task.
