AbstractManaging Forest Inventories and Operational Activities with ArcGIS Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author(s): Wilson J Edwards, David Smith, Bridget Lawlor The advent of the ArcGIS framework affords many advantages in database and applications development. In particular, the migration to the Microsoft COM standard provides an extensible platform for building specific tools focused on business practices. The requirements of an enterprise forestry system based on business process modeling techniques are complex. They require an integrated spatial and tabular database architecture that accommodates the definition of business rules for geoprocessing activities, such as inventory editing and maintenance, and activity tracking, (i.e. harvesting, planting, fertilization, etc.). This paper reviews the achievements and issues involved in developing a forestry GIS enterprise application. This includes a discussion of strategies and requirements for integrated database design, ArcSDE and geodatabase implementation, application development with ArcMap framework, and database replication and deployment to distributed regional offices. This paper will present a forest land information system that allows foresters to manage timber stands by monitoring silvicultural activities. A sample demonstration will be provided.
