AbstractManaging Environmental Information Management Systems (EIMS) Track: Environment Management Author(s): Andrew Wesley Kendrick Use of EIMS is growing annually at 35 percent, with total spending estimated to be $13 billion by 2003. For this reason, EIMS will become a significant part of every environmental professional's daily life...and budget. Environmental professionals are faced with various state and federal standards for EIMS; however, to date there are no true standards. Relational database management systems and decision making tools, such as GIS, have significantly improved our ability to manage environmental data; however, opportunities still exist to improve data sharing. This presentation addresses the importance of standards, leading to improved portability of EIMS among government and industry stakeholders.
