AbstractSaving the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone Track: Water Resources Author(s): Joe Chapa, Dan Stone The source of drinking water for the City of San Antonio is an underground aquifer. Over the past 15 years the City has experienced rapid development, and some of this development has taken place over the aquifer's recharge zone. With water being a scarce commodity, the citizens of San Antonio approved a proposition allowing the City to purchase undeveloped land over the recharge zone in an effort to preserve the natural recharge of the City's water source. A team of volunteers united to determine the most vulnerable areas of the recharge. The team was to take into consideration the geology, wildlife, and man-made development of the area--a problem that can only be solved with a GIS.
