AbstractCoastal Applications of IKONOS Data Track: Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources Author(s): Barbara Morey Space Imaging's IKONOS remote sensing satellite with four-meter, 11-bit multispectral capability has greatly increased the ability of GIS and remote sensing specialists to collect information in their areas of interest. Typical improvement is an increase in the ability to identify objects and assess the spectral characteristics of the object. Examples include identification of individual trees and large plants, urban features such as roof types and sidewalks, and pervious and impervious surfaces. The small pixel size and system ability for one day revisit has supported enhanced water depth analysis, reef health assessment, and detection of underwater objects. This has led to increased success in detecting changes, such as recently disturbed soils (construction activity, unmapped trails), and identifying vegetation (natural or crops) and monitoring its health. This paper explores several examples using four-meter, 11-bit multispectral data. The spectral bands are comparable to the Landsat sensor (decades of existing data) and can be used to continue existing studies. As the IKONOS sensor enters its second year, the archive of high-resolution multispectral data continues to grow, increasing the application to long-term studies. Areas of investigation include spectral classification, vegetation vigor analysis, and principal components analysis. The combination of analyzed image results with GIS analysis is an invaluable tool for change assessment, provides a better understanding of existing and proposed land use to professionals and laypeople, and supports mapping everything from roads and environment concerns to aiding insurance assessment and bathymetry.
