AbstractInfluencing Health Care Policy with GIS Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Joni Albright, Edward Lutz The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has maintained a GIS, utilizing Esri software, for more than five years. But simply developing applications and producing maps are not sufficient. Systems developed for operational purposes can, and should, be utilized to influence policy. In order to influence public policy within the health care arena, more than champions of technology are required. Translators are absolutely vital to ensure appropriate communication with the world of elected officials, public administrators, funding sources, and stakeholders. A major lesson the Department has learned over the years is that explanations of, funding requests for, and output from geographical information systems must be specifically focused and tailored to the individual audience. This presentation will outline several case studies demonstrating how the ISDH aggressively utilized GIS to attract significant funding and influence public health policy.
