AbstractMaking Space for the Humanities: The Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative Track: Universities and Higher Education Author(s): Lewis R. Lancaster, Karen Kemp The needs of scholars in the humanities are very different from those of traditional GIS users, and GIS has not been a software traditionally employed for solving humanities problems. The Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative (ECAI), a global organization of scholars and technical specialists, is dedicated to scholarly resource discovery and communication using GIS. Four representatives of ECAI will discuss their individual research projects, in which research data is indexed by time and space, and the larger issue of the potentially enormous uses of GIS in the humanities. Through technology, ECAI seeks to redefine the production and exchange of academic research. Lewis R.
