AbstractVisualization of Multiple Physician Office Locations Track: Health and Human Services Author(s): Wansoo Im GIS is an extremely useful tool for the health care industry. A good example is analyzing the spatial distribution of health care resources. Before GIS was actively used in the health care industry, health care data was often aggregated at the county, municipal, or ZIP Code levels. With GIS, the location of health care provider offices can be geocoded at the street level, providing a more detailed level of spatial analysis for the researcher or health care analyst. However, the representation of multiple providers at the same location (e.g., physician groups on a map or multiple providers located within a single address) on a map presents a problem. GIS users have a problem representing these multiple office locations on the same dot on the map without losing any information. In this paper, we look at various alternative ways of transforming a multiple physician office location to a readable visual pattern without losing its accuracy. By using ArcView GIS, we will examine how to visualize multiple physician office locations on the map using various approaches: dots for different specialties, dispersed dot location, dots with different sizes, density maps, and other approaches.
