Abstract

Managing Ski Accidents Using a GIS
Track: Ski/Avalanche
Author(s): Robert W. Plummer

Injuries are an inherent part of skiing and related snow activities. Ski hills go to great lengths to try to reduce the severity and frequency of the accidents. All on-hill staff and ski patrollers are responsible for risk management. To do this, the ski accident data is stored and analyzed in a simple database program. The locations of the accidents are plotted on a paper map using color-coded pins. This paper looks at how a GIS can be readily adapted to do the same thing.
