AbstractKeeping Linear References In-Sync with the National Hydrography Dataset Track: Water Resources Author(s): Cindy McKay The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is designed to be a framework for linear referencing of water resources information. In this context, linear referencing is the act of associating attributes to points or stretches along the stream network through an addressing scheme imposed upon the network. An important consideration in linear referencing is the maintenance of the references as the underlying stream framework changes. In two decades, users of the EPA Reach Files have tied many different types of attributes to reaches. These attributes must now be moved to the NHD. As the NHD changes, the links between these attributes and the NHD will need to change as well. This paper addresses the technical aspects of migrating linear references and some of the tools that have been recently built for this purpose.
