AbstractThe Evolution of GIS Applications in the Public Sector Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Keith Cooke Over the last decade, the role that GIS applications have played in local and state governments has evolved immensely. This had been fueled by the growing use of desktop GIS in ArcView and the ability to customize it with relative ease. Now, with Esri's adaptation of industry-standard programming platforms for ArcGIS, ArcObjects promises to increase the roles and usage of GIS in the public sector. We will examine this evolution by demonstrating several applications geared toward planning, utilities, and cemetery management. Through this evolution, we'll see increased efficiency and productivity from the applications as well as interfaces created specifically for GIS novices.
