AbstractGIS Applications for Telematics Services Track: Location Services Author(s): Kevin E. Endlich, Wendy M. Saylor GIS supports a substantial portion of content for Response Services Center, a telematics services provider. Operators provide various telematics and location-based services, including emergency assistance, roadside assistance, driving directions, closest point of interest, local weather, and local events, to subscribers of the service on a 24-by-7 basis. The system providing these services is architected based on ArcSDE to store and manage spatial data within an Oracle database and ArcIMS to generate and display spatial content (maps) on operator workstations using a standard Web browser. Current GIS content includes static spatial data (political boundaries, highways, roads, etc.) and general points of interest. The system has been architected to facilitate the future integration of additional spatial data content as well as other static or dynamic GIS content sources to provide new and exciting location-based services.
