AbstractGIS at National Weather Service Headquarters: Hurricanes/Tropical Storms, River Conditions Track: Climate and Weather Author(s): Ira Graffman The National Weather Service is experimenting with Web-based dissemination of forecast and hydrologic data at NWS Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. Currently, there are two projects in development--a Hurricane Forecast product and River Conditions product. ArcView GIS 3.2 is used in both prototypes to ingest the incomming realtime data and to create output shapefiles for the ArcIMS Web pages. The hurricane product consists of a customized ArcIMS HTML display that includes the storm's forecasted path and locations, the uncertanty of the path depicted as a cone, and the past track of the storm. The data is refreshed at the receipt of new data from the National Hurricane Centers and/or the Central Pacific Hurricane Center. The River Conditions projuct is also utilizing a customized ArcIMS HTML display that features approximately 20,000 points of flood data accumulated across the U.S. at regularly scheduled times. For both prototypes the resulting Web pages reflect the incomming realtime data.
