AbstractDefinition and Characterization of Potential Avalanche Release Areas Track: Ski/Avalanche Author(s): Margherita Maggioni, Urs Gruber, Andreas Stoffel Determining the avalanche frequency of an avalanche track is one of the most difficult factors in avalanche hazard mapping. In this paper a detailed analysis of avalanche release area topographies is performed to find general rules to relate topographic parameters to the avalanche frequency. In a first step, coherent potential release areas are automatically defined based on large scale topographic parameters. In a second step, every potential release area is characterised by smaller scale geomorphologic parameters. Finally, these geomorphologic parameters are analysed with respect to the avalanche frequencies observed in the different potential release areas.
