Abstract
Using GIS to Analyze National Weather Service Warnings Track: Climate, Weather and Atmosphere Author(s): Ken Waters ArcGIS was used to analyze National Weather Service warnings (tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash flood, and special marine) from 2003-2005. Analysis included comparisons of areas of more than 100,000 polygon warnings versus county areas. In addition, warnings were compared to actual severe weather reports for use in compiling verification performance measurement statistics. This work supports the NWS Polygon Warning Initiative Team that is looking at providing more useful warnings focusing on actual weather threat rather than existing geopolitical boundaries such as an entire county.
