Abstract

Suffolk University's Maine Field Station—Getting There from Here
Track: Education
Author(s): Scott Lussier

The 50+ acre R.S. Friedman Field Station of Suffolk University provides a living laboratory for observing and studying marine life in a pristine environment dominated by the dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy on the coast of Eastern Maine. Our facilities provide classrooms, rustic accommodations, flow-through seawater systems and field sampling equipment that support a variety of field-oriented classes as well as student and faculty research projects in a magnificent natural setting.

In 2008, the Physics Department / Environmental Engineering Program mapped and modeled the property. Using ArcGIS technology, we gathered GPS data, mapped the planimetric data in 2D and modeled the site in 3D. With our final products, we are able to provide useful data to the property managers, provide a basis to organize the many research projects, assist in the regulatory permitting process of installing a Wind Turbine and bring folks there virtually over the web.
