AbstractQuantifying Urban Forest Coverage in Mixed Development Areas Track: Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management Author The objective of the project was to develop an automated method to accurately identify urban forest canopy coverage in mixed land use areas. Calculating tree canopy coverage is an important tool in measuring the benefits provided by urban forests to a community and was the impetus behind this project. The method utilizes ArcGIS, software extensions and Lidar and Ortho-Imagery datasets. Using the methods developed, analytical accuracy increased by 30-50% over traditional methods in determining the extent of forest canopy and the methods become more automatic and more easily replicable.
