Developing a Small Island GIS - the Bermuda Experience
Defining Issue: The 1992 Rio Conference on the Environment and Development recognized the particular problems of small island communities and the role that GIS can play in promoting sustainable development. Bermuda has a long history of environmental management but is increasingly experiencing high rates of growth and development. The Bermuda Plan 1992 embraced the concept of sustainable development. A key part of this strategy was the development of a comprehensive information system to monitor the effectiveness of the plan.GIS Solution: Within Bermuda awareness of GIS was low and a pilot project was initiated to explore the potential of GIS and raise the level of awareness throughout the Government. ArcInfo and ArcView were chosen as the GIS software to try. This paper will detail the pilot project as it related to the Bermuda Planning Department. It will look at how the pilot team moved from considering ArcInfo to ArcView and more recently MapObjects as the means of implementing different
parts of a comprehensive system.
