Spatial Analysis of Residential Burglaries in Tallahassee, Florida  Paper Text

Defining Issue: The use of geographic mapping helped explain the impact of land use on the occurrence of residential burglary. GIS Solution: Mapping displayed the different residential categories, allowing unexplained anomalous patterns in burglaries to be resolved. Methodology: Using both spatial and statistical analysis, this study examines how the physical environment (i.e., land use, transportation networks, security measures, and so forth) contributes to the crime of residential burglary. Residential burglary is broken down into the categories of single-family, duplex, and multifamily units. A major finding of this research is that mixed landuse contributes to the risk of burglary. Mapping clarified the relationship between landuse and the occurrence of the crime of burglary. Software: This research was conducted using Atlas GIS for Windows and SPSS. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the advances of using mapping to augment crime prevention strategy.
