AbstractDesigning a Distributed Geographic Information System for Environmental Education Track: K-12 Education and Library Science Author(s): Ruth Lin Cheung, Stephen Castlebury Brown Many schools would like to incorporate a geographic information system (GIS) into their classrooms, but barriers such as software cost often prevent this from happening. A distributed geographic information system (DGIS) served out via the Internet can solve this problem by making a Web browser a virtual GIS. This presentation will examine how a team of graduate students at the University of Texas at San Antonio developed a DGIS (ArcIMS) to be used by San Antonio schools for environmental education. This presentation will also focus upon the educational effectiveness of a classroom DGIS, administrative barriers, technical problems, and academic value.
