AbstractThe Intelligent Basemap: A New Concept for Map Updating Track: State and Local Government Author(s): Blake Burns, Gabriel Carballo Government organizations are experiencing increased pressure to keep their planimetric and topographic basemaps more detailed and more up-to-date than ever, in order to support their functions effectively and efficiently under tight budget constraints. So far, basemaps are updated yearly (at most), using new orthophotography or a parcel fabric, many times starting from scratch over and over again. As accuracy increases, the volume of information is substantially higher, and so are the corresponding costs and delivery times. Exploiting the power of the new ArcGIS architecture, we propose a new concept, the “intelligent basemap”, where the quality and the integrity of the geometric and attribute base is assured, while promoting easier and faster editing and updating and extremely efficient support of derived geometry and metadata, and therefore, overcoming many of the challenges described above.
