AbstractMine Reclamation Using a Collaborative GIS-Based Approach Track: Environment Management Author(s): Rebecca S. Renz The impacts associated with mining activities that took place more than 100 years ago still threaten the Tenmile Creek watershed, which is the primary source of drinking water for the City of Helena, Montana. Tetra Tech EM Inc. (TtEMI) is helping to determine the nature and extent of mine waste at more than 100 abandoned sites and prevent additional mine wastes from entering Helena's water supply. To meet the demands of this task, TtEMI implemented a GIS program, which required the collaboration of two TtEMI offices, several state and federal agencies, mining companies, and consultants to adequately characterize the site. TtEMI implemented an innovative ArcInfo and ArcView GIS solution to organize thousands of analytical results, process imagery, present model results, and monitor cleanup. As the project continues, the EPA will require all data to be posted to a GIS-enabled Web site where regulatory personnel, data users, and the public will have 24-hour access to reclamation status and data.
